There was something for kids and adults alike at the multiplex. Despite, the title, Toy Story 3 turned out to be the more mature choice for the older set than the juvenile hijinks of Grown Ups. The Pixar animated sequel easily beat out the rest of the competition for the number one spot for a third week. Adam Sandler‘s latest comedy debuted in second place with $41M, thanks to a great marketing campaign that capitalized on the chemistry between the leads, who are also Sandler’s friends off screen. ‘The Hobbit’ Moving Forward; Guillermo Del Toro Out, Peter Jackson In

June 28th, 2010 No comments

The long delayed big screen version of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Hobbit will be directed by Peter Jackson. Despite the fact that Jackson has always seemed the obvious choice to direct, he had initially assumed the mantle of executive producer. The project was moving forward with Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pans Labyrinth) at the helm, until further delays caused the director to rethink his involvement in bringing the classic tale to life. He said, via the Lord of the Rings fan site, The One Ring:

In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming The Hobbit, I am faced with the hardest decision of my life. After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. Read more…

June 25th, 2010 No comments

The Weinstein Company spent most of last year on the verge of bankruptcy and got no relief with a string of high profile flops on their release schedule that included Nine and Rob Zombie‘s Halloween II.  The struggling studio, which brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein first formed in 1979 under the Miramax label, has struck a deal with Goldman Sachs that will transfer ownership of over 200 movie titles to the company and another insurance company. Despite the loss of ownership, the studio will retain the rights to their most prized possessions; Inglorious Basterds, Pulp Fiction and the Scream franchise, which is being rebooted with a fourth film scheduled to be released next year. The Weinstein’s attourney Betram Fields said Thursday:

It’s a big win for both sides. I’ve seen a lot of restructuring deals and usually someone gets the short end of the stick. This time both sides get the long end of the stick.

When Betty White hosted Saturday Night Live in May, thanks to a successful Facebook campaign, she opened her monologue, saying:

When I first heard about the campaign to get me to host Saturday Night Live I didn’t know what Facebook was and now that I do know what it is I have to say it sounds like a huge waste of time.

Waste of time or not, its global reach now extends to 500 million users. If even a fraction of that audience buys a ticket to The Social Network, it has the potential to be a big hit. Read more…
