Steven Spielberg Talks ‘Jurassic Park 3D’

March 30th, 2013 No comments

In a recent interview (posted above) Steven Spielberg discussed the upcoming release of Jurassic Park 3D and explained that technology was a natural fit:

Jurassic Park in a sense was shot in my mind in 3D.

As someone who has been skeptical of converted 3D movies, Spielberg’s enthusiasm makes a very good case that the rerelease isn’t just a crass money grab. The director of the summer 1993 blockbuster said that he was inspired by last year’s 3D rerelease of Titanic. Read more…

A Hollywood Vulture EXCLUSIVE: Mila Kunis As The Wicked Witch In The Original Oz

March 15th, 2013 No comments

In his review of Oz the Great and Powerful for the Chicago-Sun Times, Richard Roeper, echoed the sentiments of many (including myself) who were disappointed in the casting, particularly of Mila Kunis, who portrays the Wicked Witch of the West. He wrote:

Margaret Hamilton‘s Wicked Witch in the original “Oz” was the stuff of nightmares for generations. Mila’s Wicked Witch would get her first place for makeup at a Hollywood Halloween party, while her performance is closer to a Razzie than to an Oscar.

What would it look like if Kunis had portrayed the Wicked Witch in the 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz instead of Margaret Hamilton? I put together a video that demonstrates that it might not have worked out very well.

Even though there have been several big budget 3D flops recently, Disney is confident it will be able to recapture the box office magic of Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland which earned over $330 M, in the US alone, when it was released in 2010.

The studio wisely followed the marketing strategy of Alice and is predicting a huge $80 M weekend. This is Disney’s first stab at a movie based on the Oz books since Return to Oz in 1985. Read more…

Jamie Lee Curtis has been writing a column that appears in The Huffington Post for the past few years and hasn’t shied away from writing honestly about her own struggles, such as her past addiction to painkillers. She’s also used it to express her opinion on a variety of subjects from aging and divorce to the World Cup. Turns out Curtis was very offended by the Oscar telecast hosted by Seth MacFarlane and in her latest article titled “And the Oscar Goes to… Hell” she makes it clear she’s no fan of the Family Guy creator. Jack The Giant Slayer Turns Out To Be A Big Budget BOMB For Warner Bros.

March 4th, 2013 No comments

Jack the Giant Slayer was the number one movie at the box office this weekend and that would normally be a cause for celebration. Unfortunately, with a low gross of $28M, it was considered a big bomb for Warner Bros., because the CGI spectacle starring Ewan Macgregor had a budget of over $195 M.

It was an off weekend at the multiplex in general and two other new movies, 21 and Over and The Last Exorcism Part II, also underperformed. It remains to be seen how much Warner Bros. will be affected by Jack‘s disappointing returns, but the low theater attendance is coming at a time when both Disney and Dreamworks have announced they are planning to restructure their film divisions in order to remain profitable as a direct result of low performing releases. Both studios have had to rebound after big flops. Read more…

Feminism Vs. Seth MacFarlane. Feminism Wins.

Hosting the Oscars is a fool’s errand, no matter how skilled the performer. Any attempts to add fresh elements to the show don’t change the fact that the fundamental structure of the ceremony always remains the same. As do the complaints that it’s overlong, tacky and not funny. For every beloved repeat host like Billy Crystal, there’s been one time hosts such as David Letterman, Chris Rock and Ellen Degeneres to name just a few.

And while each of them had tough critics, none had to deal with the level of feminist outrage that Seth MacFarlane inspired with his hosting gig. Read more…
