‘Baywatch’: Coming Soon To A Theater Near You
The highest rated TV show in the world, which had over 1.1 billion viewers at its peak, is finally being made into a feature film. That’s right, Baywatch is headed to the big screen. Variety reports that screenwriter Jeremy Garelick is putting the finishing touches on the screenplay for Paramount.
Garelick, who also wrote The Break-up, is quoted as saying:
It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to ‘Stripes’ and ‘Police Academy,’ the comedies I loved growing up. Rather than trying to pitch the tone, I figured it would be easier to write the first act to convey who these characters were.
I think he may be overthinking this whole movie adaptation thing. All they need to do is film some well-endowed men and women in swimsuits running alongside the ocean, add a scene or two of someone being rescued from drowning and you’ve got an instant hit.
That’s why the Pamela Anderson vehicle Barb Wire wasn’t successful: the filmmakers substituted swimsuits for leather, and the beach for a futuristic wasteland (trailer posted below). Keep it simple, people!
