Flop Pop Fizzle, The Obligatory Weekend B.O. Report: Sandy on Top

flop-pop-622Apparently, a little Sandra Bullock goes a long way.The Proposal, also starring Ryan Reynolds, shook things up this weekend, taking the number one spot with a total of $34.1 million. It’s the biggest opening for a Bullock movie to date. Take that Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous! In second place, The Hangover raked in $26.9 million. What is it exactly that’s made it such a hit? Could it be the sight of Zach Galifianakis in a jock strap? The Heather Graham breastfeeding cameo? Or the fact that it doesn’t star Seth Rogen? Whatever the reason, moviegoers do seem to be bonding with it.

Up continues to soar sky high in third place, taking in $21.3 million for a cumulative total of $224 million. Now don’t go spending it all in one place Pixar! The other new movie opening this weekend was Year One, which came in fourth with a disappointing $20.2 million take. It can now join Land of the Lost and Terminator Salvation as examples of summer movies that audiences have been rejecting for a very simple reason: they stink! Let’s hope Hollywood will finally realize that they might want to do some quality control before greenlighting $100 million blockbusters based on terrible scripts. And rounding out the top five, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 hung in there, raking in $11.3 million.
