FLOP POP FIZZLE, The Obligatory Weekend B.O. Report: Halloween Déjà Vu, Saw 3-D #1, Paranormal Activity #2

It was déjà vu, with a similar line-up of movies as last year capitalizing on Halloween fever. Paranormal Activity 2 came in second place and Saw 3-D raked in $24.2M for first. It was the seventh film in the franchise, but the first spruced up with 3-D technology and the added gimmick proved to be potent draw. Its opening weekend numbers were much higher than last year’s Saw VI, which didn’t have the benefit of the hefty surcharge for 3-D films. Last year Oren Peli, the director of Paranormal Activity reassured fans that the filmmakers behind the sequel understood the material and that they would not be disappointed, when he said:

These guys get it, and the fans won’t be disappointed.

The filmmakers of the sequel appear to have pulled it off and successfully avoided the pitfalls that Blair Witch 2 encountered back in 2000. After its big number 0ne opening last week, it dropped second place, but still posted solid numbers. The smartest move may have been to stick as close as possible (for a studio film) to the movie’s low budget origins. With a budget of just over $3M, Paranormal 2 is already well into profit.
