When it was first announced that Date Night, starring Tina Fey and Steve Carrell would go into production in 2008, director Shawn Levy explained the reasons he was interested in making it with Variety. He said:

I wanted to do a relatable, grounded character comedy about marriage and the lengths we go to preserve the spark. Tina and Steve are smart and relatable, and the tone of their comedy perfectly fits this film.

Audiences and critics felt the same way about the finished product, giving the comedy a slight edge over Clash of the Titans. But just barely. The movie scored with good word of mouth and mostly positive reviews from critics.
