Great Scott! Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg Reveal That Eric Stoltz Was The Original Marty McFly

In the 25th anniversary edition of Back to the Future which is being released on DVD and Blu Ray October 26th, director Robert Zemeckis and producer Steven Spielberg reveal that Eric Stoltz, who, at the time, had just completed his first major acting role in Mask opposite Cher, was the original choice to play the role of Marty McFly. Although Zemeckis says the decision was heartbreaking, Stoltz was replaced with Michael J. Fox five weeks after filming began, because the director thought his acting style was “too intense” for the role. Stoltz would go on to star in the John Hughes-produced teen comedy Some Kind of Wonderful in 1987.  The little seen footage featuring Stoltz in the role will be available in the new edition.
