Hanes Drops Charlie Sheen TV Ads; Some Publications Will Continue To Print Them Through Spring

Celebrities can lose their endorsement deals in the midst of a media firestorm of bad publicity faster than it took Michael Phelps to swim the 200M freestyle. Three days after the news broke about of Charlie Sheen‘s Christmas day assault against his wife and arrest on felony charges, Hanes decided that maybe the ads he had filmed with Michael Jordan should go back in the same vault that Chris Brown‘s ads for Wrigley Doublemint gum went into after his own assault scandal over the summer. According to the Associated Press, Hanes Spokesman Matt Hall said:

It’s a pretty standard, straightforward call when somebody who’s in your commercials is arrested on suspicion of something of this magnitude. And we would suspend the ads both for the company and, really, for Mr. Sheen and his family as well. Given the publicity, it makes sense to not air those ads during that time.”
