‘Heathers’: Coming Soon To A TV Near You

It appears that Winona Ryder‘s dream of a Heathers sequel has gone up in smoke. According to Variety, Gary Lucchesi, president of Lakeshore Entertainment–the company that owns the rights to the 1989 cult favorite, has made a deal to turn it into a TV series. He said,

We had the title, and talked about doing a film remake at times. But doing it for TV seemed like a fresh and original idea.”

The in-development show, to be penned by writers Mark Rizzo and Jenny Bicks, will feature the same characters from the movie (including Veronica Sawyer, the role that Ryder originated), but will feature original storylines. I’m not sure if a TV show of Heathers is better or worse than a remake or a sequel, but, at any rate, it is wholly unnecessary. The movie is what it is. What are they going to do — modernize it and cast Winona in a mommy role (as they did with her in Star Trek)? Who wants to see that?
