HEY, I THINK I SEE A CELEBRITY! All Chi-Town Sightings, Week of 10/25

Lately, Chicago has been a hot spot for big budget studio projects like Transformers 3, which filmed over the summer in downtown locations. When some movies, even those set in the windy city, are forced to cut corners, the filmmakers have to scramble to recreate the city’s sights and sounds elsewhere. Canada is usually seen as the cheaper alternative. In 2002 the movie musical Chicago wasn’t filmed in its namesake, but in Toronto and in 2004, Wicker Park, starring Josh Hartnett was mostly filmed in Montréal and Québec.

  • The filmmaker’s behind the upcoming romantic comedy The Vow starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams took a similar route, filming most the movie in Toronto, but came to Chicago to capture some of the city’s notable landmarks such as Millenium Park. Tatum was spotted having dinner at Sunda on October 25 with his wife Jenna Dewan.
  • Vince Vaughn had dinner at Rhapsody on Thursday and was accompanied by his wife and the Bears’ Greg Olsen for dinner at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak Stone & Crab on October 25. Vaughn grew up in Buffalo Grove, IL and spends much of time in Chicago, so it’s no coincidence that  many of his recent films, from The Break-up to  the upcoming comedy The Dilemma (the trailer for which, got caught in the middle of the gay teen suicide media firestorm) have been filmed in the city.
  • The popular steakhouse wasn’t only a draw for Vaughn and Olsen. Bears’ linebacker Brian Urlacher dined there on Thursday as did Hugh Hefner. The Playboy founder was joined by twenty people, including his two sons and girlfriend Crystal Harris. It has been a rough year for Hefner, with his flagship magazine experiencing declining profits due to the proliferation of free online alternatives. In addition to the company’s woes, the octogenarian bachelor has come under fire from Playboy investors for his lavish lifestyle. A class action lawsuit filed in February stated:

…we think the wildcard here is Hugh Hefner. If you were Hugh Hefner, 81, would you give up the parade of busty blonds, the fancy mansion and the reality TV show for a payout? Hefner has continued to live the good life and make sure everyone knows it. Hefner remains in the limelight, showing up at media events and at the Playboy mansion … with his girlfriends by his side. Today, the price of a Playboy magazine is far higher than the price of Playboy common stock.” In 1999, the stock sold for $36 a share. Today Playboy closed at $3.14. The magazine sells for $5.99 … because of the articles.

The lawsuit helped to shed light on the shocking fact that, apparently, there are people still buying Playboy for the articles. Hef shouldn’t worry too much about the legal troubles and financial decline. Even though the magazine is struggling, his love life is not. I would imagine Hef’s assistant’s number one priority is to make sure to keep up his Viagra dosage.

  • Friday night, former Chicago Bulls player Scottie Pippen chose the recently opened Mastro’s Steakhouse to dine with some friends. In July, Pippen announced that he is rejoining the Bulls as a team ambassador. At the time of the announcement, he told NBA.com:

It’s great to be back with the organization. I don’t feel like I ever left, I just wasn’t as active as I look forward to being in the future. To be part of the Bulls family again means a lot to me. I’ve always cheered them on no matter how far away I was at the time and wished them the best. Hopefully, I can bring something positive to the organization as it tries to re-develop that winning tradition.

It remains to be seen whether Pippen’s ambassadorship will reinvigorate enthusiasm for the team. Bringing back a key figure from a bygone era doesn’t always work. It certainly didn’t help the CW’s reboot of Melrose Place. Despite the fact that they brought in Heather Locklear to reprise her role from the hit 90s series, it was unmercifully canceled in May after it had completed only one season. Consider the Bulls management warned!

  • What’s an NFL quarterback to do when he’s tired of dating the usual attractive young women that are a dime a dozen? In Jay Cutler‘s case the answer is to go Hollywood. The Bears’ quarterback was seen wining and dining The Hills star Kristin Cavallari all around the city. The duo attended a sold out show by the Canadian band Ragweed at Joe’s Bar on October 24 and viewed a performance of The Lion King at the Cadillac Palace Theater on Tuesday. Hopefully, Cutler can steer Cavallari in the right direction. The reality star made headlines in February, for all the wrong reasons, when she appeared visibly intoxicated at the Super bowl. A source told Us Weekly:

She was going around to everyone, asking them to score her some coke. Her issues are becoming apparent to everyone. She’s getting scary-thin and not showering regularly…She’s clearly unhealthy.

When the story surfaced, Cavallari denied the allegations.

Its the same story with celebreties generally obtaining too much plastic surgery, I hope they would go for a more natural look.
