Is Brüno Too Gay for the Gays?
It’s hard to make a satirical comedy about a flamboyantly gay fashion reporter without offending somebody. Brüno hasn’t even been released yet, but it’s already igniting fire among gays in the media. Even though there have been no advance previews, many high-profile “out” celebrities are concerned about the movies portrayal of homosexuality. This video, shot at an event honoring Milk screenwriter, Dustin Lance Black, has been circulating on the web:
Writer and star Sacha Baron Cohen has been promoting Brüno like gangbusters. No publicity is bad publicity, right? It’s astounding — this movie has been generating media stories for over a year, and now that gay marriage has turned into a hot button issue, the coverage is only getting more intense. Whether Brüno proves to be offensive or harmless (I’m of the latter opinion), it will undoubtedly be a huge hit…much like Cohen’s last controversial film, Borat. As long as it’s funny, that may not be such a bad thing. Especially if it means that people stop going to Night at the Museum.
