Jay Leno Trails Conan O’Brien’s ‘Tonight Show’ Ratings; More Woes For NBC

If you’re going to publicly remove a well known host from a TV institution such as The Tonight Show and embarrassingly replace him with the old host — and are prepared to deal with all of the bad press that inevitably ensues — then you better hope that the ratings, the reason for the whole late night debacle in the first place, are higher than they were before. Unfortunately for NBC, the ratings trend shows the opposite to be true. Jay Leno fell way behind in the highly coveted 18-49 demographic with a 1.1, where Conan O’Brien had a slightly higher number during his 12th week at the job.

To be fair, even David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon have fallen behind, as old fashioned late night talk shows starring white guys in suits are becoming less watched in general. Perhaps it’s time to re-evaulate what people really want to see on TV at that hour.
