Johnny Depp Announces His Dream Role: To Play Carol Channing!
Johnny Depp has made a career out of playing adorably eccentric characters like Edward Scissorhands, notorious film director Ed Wood and Captain Jack Sparrow. It makes sense then that his dream role would be to play a real-life adorable eccentric.
According to WENN, Depp stated that he would love to play Broadway legend Carol Channing onscreen because, “she’s amazing”. In response, Channing, now 88, says:
It is not a new concept to me. Not at all. Men have been imitating me for as long as I can remember. In fact, most of the impersonations I have seen have had a five o’clock shadow.
Depp as Channing would be quite a sight. Or really anyone as Channing, for that matter. It’s been a while since Tootsie, so maybe it’s about time for a major Hollywood actor to take a serious crack at playing a woman. And I’m sure Depp playing Channing wouldn’t be any worse than his creepy Michael Jackson-esque rendering of Willy Wonka.
I imagine, when or if Johnny should portray me, he will succeed. Because a true artist, such as himself, is one who loves his or her creation and therefore represents their honest view of that which they are creating. I think he is a gifted performer and I would be very proud, as well as interested in seeing what his vision of me would be.
Posted below is Channing performing a musical number in the role of the White Queen from a 1985 TV adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Coincidence or not (probably not), Depp will be starring in the newest adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic next spring.
