Melanie Griffith: “I Want To Get Back To Work”

Even at the peak of her career, Melanie Griffith had the reputation for being unreliable. That fact is made clear in Julie Salamon‘s The Devil’s Candy, a detailed account of the making of the 1990 flop The Bonfire of the Vanities which was directed by Brian De Palma. Salamon writes about the decision making process that went into casting Griffith in the role of Southern bombshell Maria Ruskin:

De Palma had directed Griffith before and thought she had the potential to make Maria a sparkly bad girl. The thirty-three year old actress had been a semianonymous starlet seven years earlier when De Palma cast her as a saucy porn star called Holly Body in his suspense picture Body Double. De Palma liked the work she’d done on that film, but he didn’t like what it took to get it out of her. Griffith had been a whine and a nag and she liked to get high. Since then she’d gotten off the drugs and alcohol and become an established star, which meant working wither her could be easier — or more difficult.

Like many other over 40 Hollywood actresses, Griffith has mostly stayed out of the limelight since her heyday in the late 80s, early 90s; resurfacing mostly for tabloid updates such as one in August announcing a visit to a rehab center. Now she says she’s ready to get back to work in an exclusive interview that appears in the latest issue of Britain’s Hello! magazine:

I want to get back to work. I start shooting a movie next month, but I don’t want to say any more in case it falls through.

Her husband Antonio Banderas, who she met on the set of the 1994 film Two Much says she’s ready to be back in the spotlight:

She’s been in the background the last few years, because she’s been dedicated to another profession – her family – and she hasn’t been in front of the cameras. But now I can see she wants to return, to make movies, and she also feels like doing theatre. She’s reading a lot of scripts, preparing to go back.
