Live performances of the songs nominated in the “The Best Original Song” category at the Academy Awards have been shut of the ceremony for the last few years. The omission, whether it has been in order to save room for more bad comedy bjork_swan_dress_oscarssketches or weird dance numbers featuring Cirque Du Soleil has not been for the best. High points from past years include Elliot Smith singing the song “Miss Misery” from Good Will Hunting in 1998, Björk singing “I’ve Seen It All” from Dancer in the Dark while wearing a swan outfit in 2001 and Dolly Parton‘s performance of “Travelin’ Thru” in 2006. This year music is back and the main reason is that one of the nominated songs is sung by the mega-selling soul singer Adele. She’ll be performing “Skyfall” as part of a Bond-themed musical tribute that will also feature Shirley Bassey, the legendary singer of “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are Forever.” The all star musical lineup also includes Barbra Streisand and Norah Jones. Posted after the jump are some of the more memorable musical  moments from past ceremonies.

 Elliot Smith, “Miss Misery” (1998)

Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey, “When You Believe” (1999)

Björk, “I’ve Seen It All” (2001)

Dolly Parton, “Travelin’ Thru” (2006)
