Pedro Almodóvar To Tackle Horror Genre With Antonio Banderas

Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, whose last film, Broken Embraces explored his recurring themes of sexual passion and jealousy, is ready to start work on his next project. Based on the novel, Tarantula, about a vengeful cosmetic surgeon, by French author Thierry Jonget, Almodóvar says it is one of the most difficult scripts that he has worked on in his career. He said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País:

It’s difficult to define. It’s in the horror genre. In any case it’s the most violent movie I’ve ever written and the lead character is very hard. He’s a man who embodies the abuse of absolute power without scruples. It will be a horror story, but without screams or shocks.

Despite the difficulty he had finishing the script, which is tentatively titled, The Skin I Live In, he said he couldn’t abandon it:

Finally I’m finishing it because I was able to resolve the huge problems in creating the adaptation. I’m very tenacious and for whatever reason I couldn’t abandon it. I’ve been writing and rewriting it since All About My Mother. I couldn’t leave it behind. It wouldn’t leave me in peace.

Antonio Banderas has already signed on to play the lead. It will be a reunion of sorts for the director and the actor, who rose to fame in Almodóvar movies like Tie Me Up Tie Me Down. The director says that the two picked up right where they had left off:

From the moment he came on board it was like we had just finished filming Tie Me Up Tie Me Down the night before. We’ve both changed but the sensation of time having passed wasn’t there. That feeling is comforting.

Almodóvar also revealed that Penélope Cruz, who has been labeled his muse, and who starred in his last film and Volver, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, will not be involved with The Skin I Live In. He said:

As far as the rest of the cast; it’s still an ongoing process. The only thing I know is that Penélope Cruz will not be a part of it. As I continued working on the story, I stopped seeing her on the page, but it doesn’t mean anything because I will continue to see her for other stories. I have many stories I have to roll out. Right now, I have a drawer full of four scripts in development.
