The 2009 MTV VMAs: Lady GaGa and Kanye Battle For Attention

The 2009 MTV VMAs aired last night and, while it may lack credibility, it’s never been short of headline-grabbing moments, usually involving Madonna or Britney (or some combination of the two). After all, who could forget the year when Madonna celebrated middle-age by making out with Christina Aguilera and Britney at the same time. Then there was Britney’s woozy performance for the 2007 VMA’s, where she seemed to have been forced to perform when she wasn’t up to it (i.e. high).

This year, however, Britney only made a brief (court-ordered?) appearance to accept an award for Best Pop Video for Womanizer, but there were plenty of others around to keep the trainwreck moments in full swing. The VMA’s started off with a bang with what seemed like a quickly thrown together Michael Jackson tribute. I kept waiting for the dancers to re-enact the baby hanging off the balcony but I guess they decided to go in another direction.

Then there was Lady Gag-Inducing’s, I mean GaGa‘s, attention-getting rendition of her hit song Paparazzi, which culminated with the “pop princess” hanging from wires with blood dripping from her “lifeless corpse.” In other words, it was Christina Aguilera’s dream come true! Ms. Gaga is quite a performer and I have a feeling that 2010 will be her big year (to get on some serious medication, that is).

It was actually Kanye West who caused the biggest commotion of the night by Swift-boating Taylor Swift‘s acceptance speech. When “You Belong With Me” was announced for Best Female Video, Kanye rushed to the stage and grabbed the mic to express his outrage that Beyoncé hadn’t won for her “Single Ladies.”

West had a similar tirade at the MTV Europe Music Awards three years ago when he stormed the stage to declare that she should have won Best Video over Justice and Simian. I think it’s finally time for the “Gold Digger” rapper to check into rehab– for his ego. Not surprisingly, West took to his blog to apologize. Here’s an unedited excerpt, which is characteristically bat-shit crazy:

I’M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD’VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED! I LIKE THE LYRICS ABOUT BEING A CHEERLEADER AND SHE’S IN THE BLEACHERS! …………………… I’M IN THE WRONG FOR GOING ON STAGE AND TAKING AWAY FROM HER MOMENT!…………….. BEYONCE’S VIDEO WAS THE BEST OF THIS DECADE!!!! I’M SORRY TO MY FANS IF I LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!!! I’M SORRY TO MY FRIENDS AT MTV. I WILL APOLOGIZE TO TAYLOR 2MRW. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!!

The man may be able to write rap lyrics, but when it comes to coherent statements, he makes Sarah Palin look like Winston Churchill.
