VULTURE DROPPINGS OF THE WEEK: Movies About The Wackiness Of Fertility
When there are sex scenes in most Hollywood movies, they’re usually mined for their potential for comedy or horror. The same goes for pregnancy, which gets depicted either as a slapstick farce that seems to have been written by a ten year old or something along the lines of Rosemary’s Baby. In Jennifer Lopez‘s comeback vehicle, The Back-up Plan, the humor is based around her character’s attempts to conceive via artificial insemination. With the roller coaster ride of emotions and quirky twists and turns, the subject matter seems like the perfect launching pad for a movie. Unfortunately, most movies about pregnancy are more likely to expose the limits of the screenwriter’s imagination than the wonder of giving birth.
