VULTURE DROPPINGS OF THE WEEK: Spring Break Movies
The recent box office success of Valentine’s Day means there will be plenty more holiday themed new releases where that came from. A sequel is already in the works titled New Years that will also be directed by Garry Marshall and feature some of the same characters. Hollywood loves to exploit the holidays for a good reason. After all, most of these movies don’t require a genius to come up with a screenplay. It’s as simple as adding seasonal decorations to a few hackneyed sitcom scenes. The resulting movie will at least fool some pour souls to let go of some of their hard earned money for the sake of holiday spirit. Halloween and Christmas are by far the most lucrative. And then there are holidays that usually equal box office poison. One of them that Z-grade filmmakers just can’t seem to avoid is spring break; a time honored academic tradition that provides an excuse for college students to make the trek to sunny climates of Florida and Mexico to drink and be merry and it’s inspired more bad movies than the ghost of Ed Wood.
